Transgender: The Definition
Transgender people identify with a gender or gender expression that differs from their assigned sex at birth. Often shortened to “trans”, some transgender people take hormones and undergo surgery during transition, while some adapt pronouns and/or appearance. Transgender is an umbrella term and can include people who do not identify as either exclusively masculine or feminine i.e. non-binary people. Transgender does not relate to sexual orientation i.e. transgender people can also identify as homosexual, heterosexual, bisexual, asexual, pansexual and any other label on the sexuality spectrum. The transgender pride flag consists of two outer light blue stripes, representing the male form, two inner light pink stripes representing the female form and a white stripe in the centre representing transitioning between genders or an undefined, neutral gender.
